Tower crane operators service and operate tower cranes—traveling, fixed, climbing or self-erecting hoisting equipment that has a vertical tower and a jib. The cranes are used to lift and move building materials to the tops of buildings under construction. They are also used to lift, move or place machinery, equipment and other large loads at industrial facilities such as ports, railway yards and surface mines.

Skilled operators typically:

  • perform pre-operational inspection on equipment
  • calculate crane capacities and load weights to prepare for rigging and hoisting
  • assemble tower cranes on site
  • perform routine maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating cranes
