Pipelayers lay pipe for storm or sanitary sewers, drains, and water mains. They are skilled at laying and connecting pipe made of many materials including cast iron, concrete, clay and plastic. They may also use radio and magnetic meters to locate pipes that need to be replaced or repaired, and perform maintenance on existing systems.

These tradespeople typically:

  • follow blueprint and written instructions
  • prepare installation areas, classify and level ditches, trenches and drains
  • dig trenches to meet depth and other specifications
  • prepare and cut piping material
  • align and position pipes
  • drill holes in pipes to install secondary lines or other pieces of equipment
  • cement, glue or weld pipe pieces, ensuring secure joints and seals
  • cover pipes with soil and other materials
